Teen in coma after attack

KUALA LUMPUR: A Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman student is in coma after he was found unconscious at the Masjid Jamek LRT station here on Monday. He is believed to have been a victim of a snatch thief.

First year accounting student Lim Sze Jian, 18, called his father to tell him about the alleged robbery before he fainted.

The boy’s mother, who wants to be known only as Mrs Lim, said her son worked part-time at a supermarket in Bandar Tasik Permaisuri in Cheras.

She said he usually took the Star LRT from Salak South to the Masjid Jamek station, where he would get on to the Putra LRT to return home in Wangsa Maju.

Lim said her husband, after receiving the boy’s distress call, rushed to the Masjid Jamek station but could not find his son.

After a fruitless search, he sought the help of the Dang Wangi police at 2am yesterday.

“Sze Jian was crying when he called his father from a public phone booth, saying he was assaulted and his hand phone stolen,” said Lim.

She said the hand phone cost RM1,000 and her son bought from his salary.

Lim said her son, the youngest of three siblings, was found unconscious and received treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, six hours after the incident.

His condition is said to be stable now after he was operated on twice yesterday to remove the haemorrhage in his brain.

Lim said her son was an excellent student scoring 8As in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.

Dang Wangi OCPD ACP Kamal Pasha Jamal, who visited Sze Jian at the hospital, said police were waiting for the medical report on the victim’s injuries.

He said initial investigations revealed there were no external injuries and his wallet was untouched.

“Only his hand phone was missing,” he added.

On July 29, TAR college student Lee Khian Yip, 18, died after he was attacked by snatch thieves. – Bernama
